Athanasios Diakos of mountainous Fokida certainly has its own history. However, it is also a typical example of a village that over time managed to acquire a new identity: its famous taverns have made it a destination and many consider it a small, Roumelio paradise for foodies.
It is built in the Vardousia mountains of Fokida, at an altitude of 1, 050 meters on their eastern slopes, and it is an old settlement: its origins are lost in the years of the Turkish occupation, when it was called Ano Musounitsa.
It officially acquired its current name in 1959, as it is considered that this is where the famous hero of the Revolution of 1821 came from
It is also easily accessible from Athens: it is 232 kilometers away, so you can reach it by car in about 3 hours and 40 minutes.
It is a charming destination in winter, which due to the altitude usually has snow, so the forest landscape acquires 'alpine' characteristics. Athanasios Diakos comes to life from the spring onwards, when most visitors and those who come for summer holidays in the mountain arrive.
3 attractions worth visiting when you are in Athanasios Diakos.
First of all, the village itself, which is located in an amazing mountain landscape, full of forests (fir, chestnut, walnut, oak), with a tributary of the Mornos passing very close by. And the fact that it is easy to walk, guarantees that with a walk around you will see all its beauties. The village has nice streets with fountains, and when you get to the back of it, if you go down the path you will see there, you will find yourself in a beautiful spot full of trees, next to the small river.
See the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.
It dominates the central square, opposite the bust of Athanasios Diakos and is stone built, built in 1872. Inside you will admire some impressive stained glass windows, which intensify the overwhelming impression it leaves on the visitor. On the outside, again, the clock placed on the wall of the belfry dominates.
Visit the Athanasios Diakos Museum
The museum was established in 2009, in the (renovated) house above the river of the settlement that has been indicated as the ancestral home of Athanasios Diakos – whose real surname seems to have been Massavetas. Every year, on the last weekend of July, the village organizes there the so-called 'Diakeia': cultural events in honor of the hero of 1821 who met such a martyr's end at the very beginning of the Revolution.
